Why Your Phone Cannot Tell You Everything About the Air

A phone can show an air-quality number in seconds. That is useful. But the number may not be a direct measurement of the air around your body.
Many phone experiences combine nearby monitoring-station data, models, forecasts, satellite information or historical patterns. The result can provide broad context for a location, but it may not reflect a short-lived change at the exact street, room or route where you are.

Three types of air-quality information

It helps to separate three different sources.
Official monitoring networks use established instruments at fixed sites. Their data supports regulation, forecasting and public reporting. In the UK, DEFRA's UK-AIR service publishes measurements and forecasts from national monitoring systems.
Modelled or forecast data estimates conditions across areas using observations, weather and atmospheric models. It is useful when you need coverage between monitoring sites and a view of what may happen next.
Personal sensors measure conditions where the device is placed. Their value is local context, but they also require careful interpretation. The US EPA's air sensor guidance recommends considering purpose, placement, performance and data interpretation.
These sources are not competing versions of reality. They answer different questions.

Why location changes the reading

Air quality can vary over short distances. A busy junction, a quiet side street, a kitchen, a bedroom and a park path do not share the same sources or airflow.
A phone may show a city or regional estimate while a personal sensor captures what is happening in one location. That does not make the personal reading automatically more accurate. It makes it more specific to the measurement point.
The difference matters when the question is personal and immediate: what is happening here, right now, and how does it change when I move?

A sensor is not a magic answer

A dedicated sensor also has limits. Different sensing technologies respond differently to pollutants and environmental conditions. Readings can be affected by placement, temperature, humidity, calibration, battery and connectivity.
The right question is not whether a device is “accurate” in the abstract. It is whether it is appropriate for the purpose, whether its measurements are understood and whether its data is used consistently.
